Malaika 04

by Laeïla Adjovi and Loïc Hoquet

Photo

“The series ‘Malaïka Dotou Sankofa’ is the result of my collaboration with French director of photography Loïc Hoquet. Our winged creature is named after a poem I wrote in 2016. 'Malaïka' means 'angel' in Swahili - 'Malaaka' in the wolof language of Senegal. 'Dotou' means "stay strong, determined" in the Fon language from Benin, where I am from. Sankofa is an Adrinkra symbol from Ghana. It is often pictured as a messenger bird flying with its head turned backwards. Sankofa means 'return and get it' or 'learn from the past'.
